Music Recommendations for Deep Work while Programming

Finding music, you enjoy listening to while working is not that easy. Of course, is always a matter of taste, but listening to your favourite album during your focus time might be too distracting and prevent you from getting into the zone. I have found that songs with lyrics are often the problem. Additionally, a soft and calm tempo is preferable.

Of course, what I’m listening to is highly dependent on my mood, and I’m always exploring new things, but there are many safe options which I’m listing below.

Lord of the Rings Soundtrack

As a big Lord of the Rings fan, the soundtrack of the original trilogy is one of my favourite picks. A bit distracting sometimes, but imagine hunting a bug with this epic background music. It will not stand a chance!

Hans Zimmer

If you are not a fan of LOTR yourself, we can not be friends. Still, you might enjoy a similar type of music from one of the most charismatic composers of our age, Hans Zimmer. He is behind the soundtracks of many Hollywood blockbuster movies like Dune, Inception, Interstellar, Batman trilogy, Dunkirk, the Lion King and many, many more.

Ambient sound

Another option is ambient sound or white noise. It can help keep your mind in a balanced state for improved focus.

⭐ Hermanos Gutiérrez Band

Western music with Latin roots. A great cocktail of simplicity and depth.

This is my new favourite pick and the inspiration behind this article.

Soul music

This is usually the kind of music that comes to mind when everyone refers to relaxing music. Calm but often with lyrics, it can be a good option for background music on non deep-work hours.

Blues Jazz

The same applies to Jazz. An excellent option for the time between deep work and meetings. The upper limit of deep work per day is 4 hours anyway, as studies have shown.

Deep Focus Playlists

So far, everything was my personal recommendation. But of course, many people had the need to create lists like this. Therefore, many deep-focus playlists exist on any of the platforms of your choice. This is a great way to explore new genres based on others people’s favourites.
